FEDERAL COURTHOUSE

The U.S. General Services Administration has proposed three locations for the new Harrisburg Federal Courthouse.  One of these locations, Green Street to Third Street and North Street to Forster Street, would require demolishing six (6) blocks of properties in CAN and building a new 10 - 12 story building that would destroy one of Harrisburg's most historic neighborhoods and alter the skyline forever.
The Capital Area Neighbors is opposed to the selection of this site.  We believe that Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act precludes the CAN site because it is both in a site on the National Historic Register and in a Municipal Historic District.  We believe that the demolition of these businesses and residences will cause irreparable harm to our friends, neighbors, and the City of Harrisburg.  Beyond the $239,000.00 loss that the city and school tax base would suffer are the countless hour of work that these residents and property owners have spent restoring their homes, businesses, streetscapes and community.
